Giant Kelp Specimen 1
Giant Kelp Specimen 1
Giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, is an ecosystem engineer that provides habitat and in some places it keeps the waves glassy.
This giant kelp was collected in Newport Beach, California and was one of my first seaweed cyanotypes. The scimitar blade, the tip of the seaweed stipe where new blades and pneumatocysts (those air floats), is trimmed and used while alive/wet during the cyanotype process. This native seaweed local to Southern California builds giant kelp forests growing up to 100ft tall. We love.

Cyanotypes and seaweed pressings are archival and stable, meaning they last for hundreds of years (the oldest one is from 1842!). However, due to the natural materials used - direct sunlight can cause them to fade over time. Try to keep them out of direct sunlight to keep them looking new :)
